The Navigator

As I wrote in a previous entry, a friend of mine recommended me one of Morris West’s books: The Navigator. I finished reading it yesterday.

The books tells the history of Gunnar Thorkild, a university professor turned down for tenure because of his strange theories about a island that nobody had ever seen, last home to the great Pacific Navigators. Thorkild is himself the grandson of a Navigator, and sets out in a expedition, with a mismatched group of people, to prove those theories.

Although it seems a simple plot, it is the base for a complex analysis of the societal relations that rule human life, much like William Golding’s Lord of The Flies, and a beautiful account of mankind’s endurance in face of great dangers.

If you enjoy a good psychological thriller, The Navigator is recommended reading.
