Digital Camera

I’m in the market for a digital camera, but I’m completely at loss about which to buy. My old camere is on its last legs, and I’d prefer to buy a digital camera this time. I read some reviews, looked at some models, but I’m still undecided since I never owned one of them.

There are many sites with good and detailed reviews of various models, recommending some models or brands, but there’s always something in the review that prevents me from making a decision. Also, since the models I can find here in Brazil are usually behind the models in North America or Europe, reviews about them are harder to find. The only thing I know so far is that I want optical zoom too and a video mode with sound support.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Sony DSC-W1 which I’m very pleased with — I’ve owned three versions of that model (one which was stolen and replaced by a newer model, and now the DSC-W1 which I bought as a replacement) and I’ve always been extremely happy with them.

It’s a UK site, but it helped me a great deal when I was looking for my first digital camera, a couple of years ago.
You decide what you want from the camera and then it compares similar models.

Hope it helps

I second the vote for the Sony DSC-W1. I have the DSC-P5 and if I were to get another digital camera, that would be my choice!

Thank you guys for the tips. They really helped. I’m closer now to deciding about a camera than I was when I posted this entry.

If it’s not too late, I have a new digital camera which is great! Fuji FinePix E550. It is small, has 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, and with a 512mp media chip, will shoot 651 images!

Hope this helps.

I also want your help in a project. My wife had a pen pal in the 1960’s and I would like to try and locate him. On his letters the name is not extremely clear, but I think the name is Edson A. Castanber (or “her”) He was living in Belo Horizonte then and would have been about 17 years old. Do you have any suggestions of how I might search on the Web for this person? It is not extremely important; just thought it would be fun to try and locate him.
Thanks, Alan

Hi, Alan–

Sorry about taking that long to reply. You camera seems really fine, but it would probably be too pricey for me. I got a Canon A85, and I’m completely satisfied with it.

About your question, I could find any information about the guy (Edson is a male name). No identical surname turned out to exist in the phone books I have either.
